November — Prostate Cancer

November — Prostate Cancer

This November, let's join the fight by learning the gestures that save lives.

MOUSTACHES FROM AFAR

Moustache month has begun

Yes, we're talking about the famous Movember movement, which supports the fight against prostate cancer!

In honour of this event, let's talk a little about this important cause. We'll introduce you to the origins of Movember, the birth of Quebec's Noeudvembre movement, and our organization's commitment to the cause. We'll conclude with some tips on how to reduce the risks of prostate cancer.

It all began in 2003 in a bar in Melbourne, Australia. Travis Garone and Luke Slattery had simply met up for a drink with friends when the idea sprouted of growing a moustache to raise funds for the fight against prostate cancer.

Thanks to the support of the Prostate Cancer Canada Foundation, Canadians joined the movement in 2007. Over the years, Movember has expanded and progressively gained worldwide recognition. Between 2003 and 2017, funds raised by the Movember Foundation supported more than 1,250 men's health projects.

NŒUDVEMBRE

The Quebec charity PROCURE was founded in 2003 with the mission to raise awareness, support, and inform people affected by prostate cancer. It also aims to promote and contribute to research on this cancer.

In 2014, the organization launched the Nœudvembre movement to offer more resources and information to affected Quebecers, as well as to further support research aimed at preventing and fighting prostate cancer.

Now in its 7th edition, this initiative offers an elegant strategy that allows men and women alike to contribute to the cause. Every year, the organization invites Quebecers to purchase and proudly wear the annual edition of the PROCURE bow tie.

By encouraging people to share their contribution — for instance, by posting on social media "#Nœudvembre – I'm doing it for…" — the movement also serves to express our solidarity with men suffering from prostate cancer.

Our commitment to the cause

To support this movement and the fight against prostate cancer, the team at Formation RCR et Secourisme Québec will proudly wear their bow ties throughout the month. We also commit to donating $1 to the PROCURE organization for every course sold in November.

During the month, we will also give two members of our community the chance to win their own bow tie through draws on our Facebook page @FRSQC.

• All dads, partners, friends, uncles, etc.

• All men who may one day receive a prostate cancer diagnosis.

• All men who may one day feel the distress that follows such a diagnosis and will need support.

Every person who proudly wears the PROCURE bow tie will contribute to "The Butterfly Effect."

In other words, for the 12 Quebecers per day who will receive a prostate cancer diagnosis, this represents, among other things:

• Access to more support and information resources.

• Greater ease in receiving help and advice from a health professional.

• Improved chances of earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments.

Here is the link to purchase your own PROCURE bow tie or simply to make a donation to the organization: https://jelefaispour.procure.ca/fr/donate

If you take part, don't hesitate to let us know on our Facebook page @FRSQC and tell us why or for whom you're doing it.

Tips to reduce the risks of prostate cancer

Numerous studies have shown that maintaining healthy habits, such as a balanced diet and an active lifestyle, may help reduce the risks of prostate cancer, slow its progression, and reduce certain undesirable side effects of treatment.

According to several studies, certain foods may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. For example, it is recommended to reduce the consumption of:

• red or processed meats;

• calcium-rich products;

• products high in trans or saturated fats.

In this sense, a healthy and balanced diet can reduce the risk of cancer by meeting the essential nutritional needs for good health and by helping to maintain a healthy weight.

Finally, it is recommended to engage in a minimum of 2.5 hours of physical exercise per week.

Simply going out for a walk can make all the difference. In fact, a simple 20-minute walk per day could reduce the risk of cancer by 30%.
